ChatGPT ads creative enhancements switch on by default for new and existing campaigns at the end of October 2026. Unless you opt out, OpenAI can rewrite your headlines and descriptions, translate your ad, resize your images and send the click to a different page on your site. It can run those versions without asking you to approve each one. OpenAI has given two start dates: its email to advertisers says Friday, October 30, and its help page, as PPC Land read it on October 21, says Thursday, October 29. If you run ChatGPT ads, make your call before the 29th.

This post covers what changes, where the switch is, what OpenAI hasn’t explained yet, and a short checklist for deciding whether to leave it on. We wrote it for founders and small teams who started testing ChatGPT ads after self-serve opened in May. Most of them don’t have a compliance team reading every ad.

Key takeaways

  • On by default: creative enhancements turn on for new and existing campaigns on October 29 or 30, 2026, depending on which OpenAI source you read. Opting out before October 29 covers both dates.
  • Four things can change: headlines and descriptions, the language of the ad, image size, and the destination URL.
  • No approval step: enhanced versions “can run automatically without requiring you to review or approve each version”, and there is no preview of every variation.
  • One switch: a single toggle in Ads Manager settings covers all four changes. A campaign-level setting overrides the account default, and opt-outs you already set are kept.
  • Your landing page becomes ad copy: OpenAI builds the new versions from your ad and your landing page, so an old price or an expired promo there can end up in an ad nobody on your team wrote.

What changed (dates)

  • June 17, 2026 (approx.): OpenAI publishes Ad Tools Terms defining “Creative Tools” that generate, modify, localize or translate ad creative (TechWyse).
  • July 2026: Ads Manager gets an option to draft ads from your website. You review, edit and approve each one before it runs (The Keyword).
  • October 20, 2026: OpenAI emails advertisers that creative enhancements will be enabled, with no per-version approval.
  • October 21, 2026: the help page, updated within the previous 12 hours, gives October 29 as the start date.
  • October 29 or 30, 2026: the default switches on.

What ChatGPT ads creative enhancements actually change

The email, which Barry Schwartz published in full on Search Engine Roundtable on October 20, describes the goal in one line: creative enhancements “make your ads more relevant to the conversation and/or user interests, helping improve performance, while reducing the work of creating multiple versions.”

The same post reproduces OpenAI’s list of what can change:

What can change OpenAI’s wording What it means for you
Headlines and descriptions “OpenAI may create new or updated text to connect your offering to the conversation or user interests.” Users may see words you never wrote. Any claim in them goes out under your brand.
Language “OpenAI may translate your ad text into another language.” Your ad can run in a language your team doesn’t read and can’t check.
Images “Images may be resized to fit the ad format.” Logos or text near the edges are at risk. PPC Land notes the text doesn’t say whether resizing includes cropping.
Destination URLs “The destination URL may be optimized to direct people to a relevant page on your website.” The click can land on a page you didn’t choose for that campaign.

According to the help text Search Engine Roundtable quotes, the system works from three inputs: “the context of the conversation or user interests, your existing ad and content from the ad’s landing page.” It also says “variations may be prepared in advance or created in real time based on the conversation.”

The Keyword reproduces OpenAI’s own example. A grocery delivery ad that reads “Fresh groceries delivered” becomes “Groceries for quick weeknight dinners” when it appears in a chat about dinner planning. The offer stays the same and the words change. That’s the harmless case. The cases worth worrying about are the ones where the words change in a way your legal, pricing or brand rules wouldn’t allow.

The approval step is gone

This matters more than the feature itself. In July, Ads Manager added a way to generate ads from your website, and the on-screen prompt read: “Review, edit as needed, and activate when you’re ready.” The new setting keeps the generation and drops the review. The help page FAQ, quoted by The Keyword, says: “You do not need to review or approve each enhanced version before it runs. The experience does not provide a preview of every variation.”

Where the switch is and how it behaves

The control sits in the Settings section of ChatGPT Ads Manager, which still carries a “Beta” label. PPC Land describes a single card titled “Creative enhancement” with one toggle. Schwartz reported that the toggle was already on in his account when he took the screenshot.

  • Two levels. There’s an account default and a campaign setting, and “campaign-specific settings will take priority over account defaults,” per the email.
  • Old opt-outs carry over. “We’ll preserve your existing account and campaign-level opt-outs.”
  • All or nothing. PPC Land found no per-type control in either source. You can’t allow translation and block URL changes. The toggle covers all four.
  • No ad-level control is mentioned in the email.
  • Terms. The settings card says the feature is “Subject to the Ad Tool Terms.”

The scope isn’t fully clear either. The email covers “new and existing self-serve campaigns.” The help page, as PPC Land checked it, says new and existing campaigns with no qualifier. OpenAI hasn’t said whether campaigns bought through its sales team or through ad-tech partners are included. If you buy through a partner, ask them in writing.

What OpenAI hasn’t explained yet

Before you leave a default on, it helps to list what you’d need to know and check whether the platform has answered it. PPC Land lists several open questions that neither the email nor the help page answers:

  • How the replacement destination URL is chosen, and whether you can exclude pages.
  • Which languages translation covers.
  • Whether enhanced versions go through the same policy review as the original ad.
  • Whether users see any label saying the ad text was generated or translated by OpenAI.
  • Whether “user interests” draws on ChatGPT memory or past conversations.
  • Any performance data from testing.
  • Whether the switch rolls out to all accounts on one day or gradually.

Reporting is the gap that hurts small teams most. The help page points advertisers to Ads Manager reporting (impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate and attributed conversions at campaign, ad group and ad level). It also warns, per The Keyword: “Changes over time do not, on their own, establish the effect of creative enhancements.” PPC Land found no reporting that separates enhanced versions from the original, and no way to see which headline, language or landing page ran in a given impression. So if results move after October 29, you can’t tell whether the rewrite caused it.

How this compares with Google’s AI-written ad text

Google also writes search ad text for advertisers, but it starts from the opposite default. Per The Keyword, which cites Google Ads Help, text customization in AI Max is a checkbox you choose to turn on. You can remove a single generated asset, and turning text customization off also turns off Final URL expansion.

ChatGPT ads (creative enhancements) Google Ads (AI Max text customization)
Default On for new and existing campaigns from Oct 29/30, 2026 A checkbox the advertiser selects
Individual versions No preview of every variation, no approval before each runs Individual generated text assets can be removed
Landing page May change to another page on your site, inside the same toggle Final URL expansion is a separate setting
Where to turn it off Account or campaign settings in Ads Manager Asset optimization in the campaign’s AI Max settings

Defaults are moving the same way elsewhere too. LoopLoop’s weekly roundup notes that, per the Google Ads Developer Blog on October 21, image extraction from landing pages will be on by default for Performance Max campaigns created from December 4, 2026. Platform defaults now lean toward “on unless you say no,” so somebody on your team should own checking these settings every month.

Should you leave it on? A decision checklist

Our view: switch it off at account level before October 29, then turn it back on only for campaigns where you’ve done the checks below. It’s a beta platform, there’s no per-version reporting, and URL changes come bundled with copy changes. That’s too much to accept by default for a small budget. Practitioners are cautious as well. Melissa Mackey replied on X that her team “ended up pausing our ChatGPT ads test due to poor lead quality,” as Search Engine Roundtable reported. That’s one account, not a benchmark, but it’s a reason not to hand over more control before you’ve seen your own lead quality.

A campaign is a reasonable candidate to switch back on if all of these are true:

  1. Every page on your site is current. OpenAI asks advertisers to keep ads and landing pages up to date, including prices, promotions, product details and availability (The Keyword). The new URL can be any “relevant page on your website,” so that means every page, not just the one you picked. Old sale pages, a sold-out product page or a closed pre-launch page are all fair game.
  2. Your tracking covers the whole site. As LoopLoop puts it, “landing-page reports and conversion tags need to cover every page the system could choose.” If your pixel or Conversions API events only fire on one landing page, you’ll lose conversions you paid for.
  3. You’re not in a sensitive category. If a rewritten headline could make a claim you aren’t allowed to make (finance, health, supplements, anything with a regulator), keep it off. The responsibility question isn’t answered in the email or help page; the card only says the feature is subject to the Ad Tool Terms.
  4. Translation can’t hurt you. If you sell in one country only, or your offer and shipping are local, an ad translated for a user elsewhere is likely wasted spend at best.
  5. You can read results at campaign level. Run one enhanced campaign next to one non-enhanced campaign with similar budgets and context hints. Ads Manager can’t split enhanced from original versions inside a campaign, so a side-by-side comparison is the closest thing to a test you can get.

For crowdfunding and launch pages

Launch campaigns have a specific risk. Many creators keep a pre-launch signup page, a live campaign link and a post-campaign store on the same domain. If the system decides an old pre-launch page is the “relevant page” while the campaign is live, the click goes to a dead end. Before turning enhancements on for a launch, redirect or unpublish any page that no longer matches what you sell today. ChatGPT ads in October 2026: the basics for new advertisers

If you haven’t tested the channel yet, here’s where things stand, with sources:

  • Reach: on October 21, 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT ads now run in 89 countries after adding 26 more, and that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since launch (The Next Web). PPC Land points out that the 100,000 is a cumulative count, not the number of advertisers active today. The Next Web cites The Information’s report of about 20,000 advertisers in late August.
  • Who sees ads: only users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free (The Next Web). Go costs $8 a month, per OpenAI’s January 16, 2026 post as reported by Unite.AI.
  • Where ads don’t show: ads aren’t eligible next to sensitive or regulated topics such as personal health, mental health or politics, and aren’t shown where the user says or is predicted to be under 18 (TechWyse).
  • How targeting works: campaigns use “context hints” at ad group level instead of exact-match keywords. An ad is made of the advertiser name, favicon, title, description, landing page URL and image, and OpenAI’s May documentation recommended a headline of about 16 characters and a description of about 32 (PPC Land).
  • Buying: self-serve Ads Manager opened in beta to US advertisers in May with cost-per-click buying, alongside partners such as Pacvue, Kargo and StackAdapt (Adweek). The earlier $50,000 minimum was dropped, and Ads Manager added a Conversions API and pixel (EasyInsights).

What it costs

Pricing has dropped fast. At launch, reports put ChatGPT ads at about a $60 CPM with a $200,000 minimum commitment (ALM Corp, Digital Applied). A September 2026 cost guide from Sprites.ai, citing OpenAI’s Help Center, lists:

Item Figure Source as cited
Minimum daily budget $25 USD OpenAI Help Center
Recommended starting CPC bid $3 to $5 OpenAI Help Center
Reported CPM $60 at launch; $15 to $45 since April 2026 Press reports (The Information, Digiday)
Account-level minimum None published; pilot minimums ended May 5, 2026 OpenAI

At a $25 daily floor, a month of testing costs about $750 before you learn anything. Lead quality and tracking matter more than the click price. If you’re comparing this with search or social, our PPC management team can set up a fair test across channels. If your aim is to show up in ChatGPT’s answers rather than the ad slot below them, that’s a different job, covered in our SEO, GEO and AEO guide.

What to do this week

  1. Before October 29: open Ads Manager → Settings and check the Creative enhancement toggle. Turn it off at account level unless you’ve decided otherwise.
  2. Same day: check every live campaign’s own setting. Campaign settings override the account default.
  3. This week: list every page on your domain that could plausibly be “relevant” to your ads. Update prices and promos, and redirect anything out of date.
  4. Before switching anything back on: confirm your pixel or Conversions API fires on every page, not just your chosen landing page.
  5. If you test it: run an enhanced and a non-enhanced campaign side by side for a fixed period and compare cost per lead or sale, not click-through rate alone.

FAQ

Can I turn off creative enhancements in ChatGPT ads?

Yes. OpenAI’s email says you can opt out before October 30, 2026 or change your settings at any time in Ads Manager. There’s an account default and a campaign-level setting, and the campaign setting wins. Existing opt-outs are kept (Search Engine Roundtable).

When do ChatGPT ads creative enhancements start?

The email says Friday, October 30, 2026. OpenAI’s help page, updated on October 21, says Thursday, October 29 (PPC Land). Acting before the 29th covers both.

Will I be able to see every version of my ad?

No. The help page says “the experience does not provide a preview of every variation,” and you don’t approve each version before it runs (The Keyword).

Can OpenAI send my ad clicks to a different page?

Yes, if enhancements are on. The destination URL “may be optimized to direct people to a relevant page on your website.” OpenAI hasn’t explained how that page is chosen or whether you can exclude pages (PPC Land).

Is there a minimum spend for ChatGPT ads?

No account-level minimum has been published since pilot minimums ended on May 5, 2026. The minimum daily budget is $25 USD, per OpenAI’s Help Center as cited by Sprites.ai.

Who sees ChatGPT ads?

Users on the Free and Go plans in supported countries (89 as of October 21, 2026). Plus, Pro and Enterprise users don’t see ads (The Next Web).
